·  How do I disable that annoying fly-by intro?

Easy Peasy. Just go into the /unrealtournament/system/ folder and open up the unrealtournament.ini file. In 6th line from the top (roughly), replace this line:
"LocalMap=CityIntro.unr"
With the following line:
"LocalMap=UT-Logo-Map.unr."

[ Back to Top ]

·  How can I show my frame rate?

You can do this two ways:
Press the apostrophe (‘) key to show the console and then type in: “timedemo 1” (without the quotes). Press escape to close the console and you’ll notice your average frame rate and your frame rate for the last second are now displayed over on the right hand side of your screen. To turn it off again, open the console and type “Timdemo 0”.

On the Unreal Tournament desktop, select the “Tools” Menu and then the “TimeDemo Statistics” option. Perform the same task to turn it back off.

[ Back to Top ]

·  How do I run/record a demo?

To start recording a demo, go into the console and type: “demorec dem1”. This will allow you to record a demo that will stop automatically when the level ends. However, to manually stop the demo, type: “stopdemo”. To watch the demo you have just recorded, type: “demoplay demo1”. Please note that all recorded demos are placed automatically in the UnrealTournament/System folder.

[ Back to Top ]

·  How do I take a screenshot?

In the game it’s already set up to F9, although you can change this (see setting up binds later in this document). Your screen is saved in the UnrealTournament/System folder and is called shotxxx.bmp

[ Back to Top ]

·  How do other players do those flips?

What they’re actually doing is “dodging”. Tapping twice quickly on the forwards key does this. The player doesn’t actually see him/herself flipping from their point of view, but that’s how the other players see it. As opposed to popular opinion, tapping twice quickly on either the left or right strafe key twice quickly does NOT perform this function.

[ Back to Top ]

·  I was playing online, and everyone was either fat or skinny. Is this a bug?

No. This is a mutator (variation of the standard game) where a person becomes fatter with the more kills they get, and skinnier the more they are killed.This does not affect how easy tey are to hit - the 'collison radius' is still exactly the same size - all it affects is how easy you are to see (it is a lot harder not to see a hugely fat guy, where as a skinny guy may not be noticed as much).

[ Back to Top ]

·  How can I bind keys in UT?

This is a little more tricky, but fairly straight forward if you know your advanced options. Obviously you can set up your weapons selector binds in the preferences menu, but If you’d like to bind the “N” key to perform a jump while saying “You Like that?” then you’d have to perform the following:

1. Bring up the console and type in “preferences”.
2. Choose “Advanced” and then “Raw Key Bindings”. A list will then appear showing you which keys are bound to which action.
3. Scroll down to the “N” key part, click on it and type the following into the box that appears: “speech 3 1 0 | jump”. You’ll notice that the speech part is defined by a number code. I will try to provide a list of codes and what they mean ASAP.

Hopefully this will give you and idea of how to go about setting up binds.

·  How and where should I install maps and models?

To install and use the maps:

Copy the map to your Maps directory inside your Unreal Tournament directory. Maps may also include custom textures, sound effects or other files. Files with different extensions go to different folders like this:

*.unr --> Maps
*.umx --> Music
*.uax --> Sounds
*.utx --> Textures
*.u --> System

If you want to keep UT's original files and downloaded files separate, finda section in unrealtournament.ini that defines some paths where to search the files (Paths=xxx). Create a directory or multiple directories where tostore downloaded maps and other files, for example "Maps_Custom" in your UT dir, and under it "System", "Maps", "Textures", "Sounds" and "Music". Then add the following lines to your unrealtournament.ini:

Paths=../Maps_Custom/System/*.u
Paths=../Maps_Custom/Maps/*.unr
Paths=../Maps_Custom/Textures/*.utx
Paths=../Maps_Custom/Sounds/*.uax
Paths=../Maps_Custom/Music/*.umx

You can now copy all newly downloaded files into these dirs, and UT will find them there.

[ Back to Top ]

·  How do I use new mutators?

Just Double-Click on the "x.umod" file and it will automatically install. The mutator will then be accessible via the game setup menu as normal. Failing that then just drag the .umod over the setup.exe icon in your unreal tournament folder and voila!

[ Back to Top ]

·  Should I use a joystick with UT?

The best combination for any First Person Shoot-em-up game always will be a mouse and keyboard. It’s the cheapest option too. However, some people are perverts and will try to tell you otherwise :Zwinker:

[ Back to Top ]

·  Where can I find UnrealEd?

It's on the 2nd CD of Unreal Tournament along with the S3 extra textures.

[ Back to Top ]

·  Are all those awesome online players cheating?

When you first come online to play UT, almost everyone looks awesome. I’m afraid to say that these people are NOT cheating, and that it’s going to take a little practice for you to get to that level. I know it can be a bit soul destroying, but if you remember that it’s just a game and play for fun, then you’ll quickly find your name rising on those final scoreboards. All FPS games have a steep learning curve, but there’s nothing more rewarding than sticking with it and eventually winning your first online level.

Practice with the bots and allow their skill level to be automatically adjusted to suit your playing ability. What you will find is that you seldom win a level this way until you can eventually play and win at the “Godlike” setting. This is good because the UT bots are continually “pushing” you, and you’re gaining skill without even knowing it.

It's worth noting though, that you might join a server and everything looks and feels just plain wierd. This isn't anyone cheating either - It's a mutator in effect, and man, they CAN be funky.

Please also bear in mind that the subject of cheating has become a very sensitive subject in alt.games.unreal.tournament. It seems there may be some sore losers out there, and most of the people are getting sick of their complaints and accusations. Remember this: How would you like it when you finally won your first level and some one accused you of cheating? It would pretty much take the sharp edge off of your pride, huh? All I’m saying is think hard about accusing someone of cheating

[ Back to Top ]

·  I suck Hard. Where can I find cheats for multiplayer?

Don’t even try. Cheating can completely ruin everyone’s fun, and it’s not even your own skill that’s getting you those kills. Just practice! It won’t be long until you’re pitting in a tough fight. Besides, there basically aren't any cheats for UT clients. That might reduce a player's temptation to suspect cheating

[ Back to Top ]

·  What key do I press to display the scores screen?

Press F1

[ Back to Top ]

·  I was carrying the flag during a CTF game, but when I got back to base I no longer had it. Why?

Don't use the translocator. If you use it, you'll leave the flag behind. Epic made it work that way to avoid the Quake 2 grapple-monkey syndrome. Getting a flag back home should involve some work and some risk, not just a couple of teleports.

[ Back to Top ]

·  How does that “Auto Balance” function work with Bots?

In team games, auto balance forces bots onto teams as needed to ensure both teams are evenly matched as humans enter and leave the game. Don't get this confused with Force Team Balance which forces humans onto one or the other team when they join to ensure equal teams.

[ Back to Top ]

·  How does that “Auto Adjust Skill” function work with bots?

In single players games it automatically adjusts it's skill depending on how well you're doing. This ensures that your games aren't ALL walkovers Smile

[ Back to Top ]

·  What is ping?

Ping is the time in milliseconds for your PC to send a “packet” of information to a server and then for your PC to receive an “acknowledgement”. Obviously you want this number to be as low as you can get. UT is very playable with a ping of 200, but some computers start to “stutter” at a ping of 350 and up.

[ Back to Top ]

·  I’m going to reinstall UT. What files should I save?

The user.ini file though from the unrealtournamentsystem folder

[ Back to Top ]

·  Why does some maps always crashes UT ??

Yes infact I just research this for my own question, lol....ok here is how to fix it.
Those maps you mention all involve special textures that your computer hits and crashes, but once started again, it works fine, right???
Go and download directx9 and it should solve all problems... You could also try using opengl instead of direct3d (or visa versa)

Or, you can download and install the bonuspacks 1 to 4. They are said to have fixed bugs and known problems in UT.

[ Back to Top ]

·  Why is the sound distorted.

1. Make sure your jack is plugged in all the way
2. Try to reinstall you sound card drivers
3. Tweak your UT Audio settings, this is most likely the problems.
4. Uninstall and then reinstall your sound card.
5. Unistall UT and reinstall

If you suffer distorted sounds (most likely encountered while running games), read on.................

The problem with XP and (not only) sound cards, often appears after you install the card's manufacturer'r drivers.

I had this occur with SB Live Drive 2 + Platinum 5.1. I looked at Creative's website but had no luck in locating suitable driver updates. Upon telephoning Creative, I was told that if I sent them some postage (ÂŁ1.50) they would send me a whole new CD's worth of drivers and applications. This I did and guess what? It still failed to solve the problem

Ok, here is the reason and the fix....

Plain XP works with your soundcard because MicroSoft use their own synthetic drivers. Obviously they work in some other secret way to the drivers that many manufacturers have written according to the guidelines laid down by Bandit Bill's company

The answer was finally demonstrated to me by a clued-in guy who had obtained the .Plus 2 pack from MS. (Don't bother with the .Plus 1 pack, it's virtually useless from our point of view).

Install the stuff from the 2nd pack and lo and behold... good sound and all of the applications suddenly start working correctly

·  UTPure saying you a cheat when you're not

Since this is happening often lately (blame UTPure) here is what you should try:

If you get:
Code:

UTPure has detected an impurity hiding in your Client (ID:xxxxx)

The only real solution is (or should be) to remove ALL UTPure files from your System and Cache dirs. Cache ain't your fault, if they ended up in your System dir you have been too excited with (for example) Unreal Cache Cleaner 3

The fast way to fix it that will (should) work is:

1/ Delete all .tmp files in your UT directory
2/ Delete all files in your Cache/ directory
3/ Delete all UTPure files from your System directory

Or delete the following files:

BP1Handler*.u
BP4Handler*.u
UTPureRC*.u
VAHandler*.u
OCAFiles*.u

Note that its a bit of a shame to delete all downloaded maps (by deleting your entire Cache dir in step 2) so if you can, find the files mentioned above in your cache with Cache Cleaner and delete those only.

For linux and apple people the solution almost is the inverse, if you get shit while trying to connect, download the relevant UTPure files manually and install them into your System directory.

If that doesn't work, reinstall I guess.. Or wait for a new UTPure or something. T sucks but tis not our fault I don't think.

If you use cache cleaner it's a good idea to follow the procedure at the bottom of this document. (bottomline: tell cache cleaner to NEVER move the files mentioned above to your System dir by right clicking on them and setting the 'never move' option)

[ Back to Top ]

·  Shooting with gun has no effect or if i shoot at the wall for example i didnt get any holes in the wall

Everyones got that prob, clear your cache and delete any Pure files from your system folder also any BPhandlers files.

[ Back to Top ]

·  When I play a .dem file, sometimes the viewpoint looks upside down.

Packed called specfix should fix that, well did it for me anyways...

[ Back to Top ]

·  How do you find ,open and delete cache files ?

First of all, you have to find where unreal is installed on your hard drive.

Check directories like :
C:Unreal Tournament
or C:EPICUnreal Tournament

Something like that.

In this directory, you will find a subdirectory called Cache, which contains ............ cache files. You can do whatever you want with these cache files. (delete, etc.)
You may wish to open the file cache.ini to have the "true names" of your cache files.

·  I can't define a key for my voting window

The lines in your UnrealTournament.INI are automatically made by install of the MapVote MOD, so don't worry bout those, it was just info. But the line in your User.INI is more important, this keybind allows you to use MapVote, happy it helped

USER.INI
---------------
M=mutate bdbmapvote votemenu
* binds the M key to mapvote , or take another key not in use *

UnrealTournament.INI
--------------------------
* the following should exist with some options in it *
* BDBMapVote versions could varie *
[Engine.GameEngine]
ServerPackages=bDBMapVote2

[BDBMapVote303.BDBMapVote]

[ Back to Top ]

·  How do you join a server in spectate mode ?

Go to player setup and choose spectate.
If the server will allow spectating AND there are free spectator slots, you should be able to join ok

[ Back to Top ]

·   wanted to go on JEPPA server but there came a connection failed.....("cant find file for package OCA_Skin S1")

This is out of my head but it goes something like this:

1.Clear your cache (as said above)
2.Check your ut/system directory for those Pure/OCA-files too and delete those.
3.Connect to PM-server and you download those modified Pure-files from there.After disconnect use cachecleaner and convert those OCA-files to your ut/system directory.
4.Goto some server that uses Pure6E (you download those then), when you disconnect , LEAVE Pure-files in the cache.

[ Back to Top ]

·  If i connect to a server, I get a version mismatch at the file: XXXX

Whenever you get a version mismatch, do the following.

Identify the file, it most likely will be a .utx texture file. On rare occasions it may be a system file .u, or possibly another type.
Just remember the name of the mismatched package and search through your UT folders until you locate it.

Now move that file to (say) your desktop. In most cases it can be deleted, but to be on the safe side, just move it away from UT.

Finally, reconnect to the server and it should automatically download the new version to you.

[ Back to Top ]

·  Somtimes not all of the servers of my UT favorites load up properly.

Everyone who was DSl/Cable gets internet spikes, when this occurs, you get packetloss (loss of info in transfer from PC to PC). This packetloss was occuring right as the PC was pinging the server...casuing the over servers to look fine.

Solution :

Just refresh favorites and all should be well....(unless you have more packetloss)

·  UT stands still 1/4 sec in game

I have seen this effect too, sometimes lasting up to 2 ... 3 seconds.
As we all run different O.S., the finger does seem to point at UT.
What the actuall cause(s) are is something hard to pin down.
As I never see this happen in offline play, it would not seem to be related to game or video buffer flushing. This leaves us with comms handling.
When the pause happens, I always look at the modem lights.
They always seem to be flashing, so there is definitely some traffic passing. I know that UT does have some issues with it's netcode, but how they affect the game does not seem to be fully documented. You see this effect when UTPure is looking at a client. You join the game and freeze for a few seconds while you are being validated. All the time this is taking place, there is definitely internet traffic passing. It may be that from time to time, a lot of item refresh data is being sent (as housekeeping resynch) in addition to the regular player positional info being swapped between the server and each client. Certainly when a player leaves or joins (mid game) there can be a noticeable pause while the server replicates this new info to all of the clients.

I also have a problem with my 3D sound. When I quit the game, it can take up to 10 seconds for the sound to vanish. I assume this may be an aspect of the audio stream buffering. On another PC I don't experience this, so it could be a function of some driver(s) (I'm thinking that DirectX has a lot of hidden defects) or just the way that I have set the game up.

If anyone else gets these type of pauses, I can only suggest going back to a new minimal install of the game, roll back DirectX to 8.0 or 8.1 and possibly the default video drivers that came with your cards. If this seems to cure the problem, then start up-versioning these drivers/interface apps and your UT a step at a time, noting when these pauses get reintroduced.

[ Back to Top ]

·  UTPure has detected a impurity hiding in your client

Either you have one of these...

1. Cheater Files
2. Packet loss (Bad connection) or too much stuff running on your PC
3. You have too many Cache file
4. Erase you ZP handlers

[ Back to Top ]

·  every time i join the server, i spawn, than die.......nothing pops up, it takes me 2 minutes to respawn the first time, and another 2 minutes for the chat, my hud, anything pops up........its really pissing me off, i cant see anything, dont know what team

ok bu, I heard about this before, just go and delete your BP and ZP handles.... this should solve all of your problems....
